How to Format a Table in Google Docs™ So It Looks Professional

Make a Google Docs table easier to read with better spacing, alignment, borders, and consistent styles—without formatting every cell one by one.

A professional Google Docs table is easy to scan: the header is distinct, numbers align consistently, cells have enough breathing room, and borders support the information instead of overpowering it. Start with built-in table properties, then use a reusable style when you need the same result repeatedly.

Tables often look unfinished not because they need more colour, but because every part was formatted separately.

Fix the Essentials with Table Properties

Click in the table, right-click, and choose Table properties. Start with these changes:

  • Give the header row a contrasting fill and bold text.
  • Align text columns left and number columns consistently.
  • Add modest cell padding so content is not crowded.
  • Use only borders that help readers follow rows and columns.
  • Adjust column widths for the content.

For a long table, alternating row colour makes it easier to track across the page. Keep the palette restrained: one header colour, one subtle alternate-row colour, and readable text are usually enough.

Apply a Consistent Style Faster

Select the table, open the Text To Table Converter sidebar, expand Format Table, and choose a preset style. You can preview the result before it changes the selected table. For more control, use the table editor to adjust borders, fills, alignment, padding, and column widths together.

A Quick Checklist

  • Can someone identify the header row immediately?
  • Are dates, currency, and numbers aligned consistently?
  • Does the table fit cleanly on the page?
  • Are related tables styled consistently?
  • Is the contrast readable when printed?

Avoid turning a table into a screenshot just to make it look polished. If the table started as loose text, first use Text to Table to create a real table, then format it.
