Merge Google Docs™ Tabs into One Document
Combine selected tabs from one Google Doc into a new, editable document while keeping the source file unchanged.
Need one review copy instead of a document full of separate tabs? Merge Tabs Wizard combines the content you choose into a new Google Doc, making it useful for assembling chapters, shortening reports, or preparing a clean handoff.
The feature works in Google Docs™ and never edits the source document. Your selected content is copied into one continuous output document so you can review, share, or refine it separately.

Text To Table Converter
Install Text To Table Converter free to select two or more tabs and combine their content in a new Google Doc.
Google Docs™ only
Merge Tabs Wizard is available from the Text To Table Converter add-on in Google Docs. Open the source document first, or start from another Doc and choose the source file from Google Drive.
When to use Merge Tabs Wizard
- Combine selected chapters from a report, manual, proposal, or lesson plan.
- Create a shorter version of a large tabbed document for a specific audience.
- Prepare one continuous review copy without changing the original document.
- Choose sections from another Google Doc by selecting it from Google Drive.
How to merge tabs
The wizard guides you through choosing a source, selecting tabs, and naming the new document.
- 1Open Google Docs and launch Text To Table Converter. In the sidebar or Extensions menu, open Document Tools and choose Merge Tabs Wizard.
- 2Keep Merge tabs from this document selected, or choose Merge tabs from another document and select a source file from Google Drive.
- 3Choose at least two tabs. Use Select All or Deselect All for quick changes; selecting a parent tab also selects its nested tabs.
- 4Review the selection, continue to the final step, and enter a title for the new document. The default title follows the source title with “Merged” added.
- 5Optionally enable Include a Heading Styles Legend if you expect to adjust heading styles after the merge.
- 6Click Merge. When processing finishes, open the new document from the success screen and review the result.
What the merge creates
- A brand-new Google Doc; the source document and its tabs remain unchanged.
- One continuous document containing the selected tab content in source order, with page breaks between tabs.
- Supported text, headings, lists, tables, images, colors, and local formatting copied as closely as Google Docs allows.
- The source document’s page layout, headers, footers, and named heading styles used as the basis for the output.
Try a small merge first
Start with two or three tabs and review headings, tables, checklists, and spacing before combining a larger document.
Heading Styles Legend
This option adds sample heading lines to the output. Use Google Docs’ Update “Heading X” to match command to adjust the document theme, then delete the legend when you are finished.
Current limitations
Google Docs does not expose every document element to add-ons. Review the new document before sharing it when the source uses advanced Docs features.
- Comments, suggestions, revision history, bookmarks, protected ranges, smart chips, AI summaries, and e-signature fields are not copied.
- Table of contents elements are skipped.
- Checkboxes can be converted into standard list items.
- The selected source tabs become one continuous document; the original tab structure is not recreated in the output.
Choose the right merge tool
| Tool | Use it when | Output |
|---|---|---|
| Merge Tabs Wizard | The content comes from selected tabs in one Google Doc. | One new, continuous document. |
| Merge Documents Wizard | The content is spread across as many as five Google Docs. | One new, continuous document using the first source as the style master. |
