The Image to Table feature in the Text To Table Converter add-on has a Documents mode built for exactly one job: reading business documents — receipts, invoices, bank statements, forms — and turning them into tidy Google Sheets™ rows. Its best trick: one row per line item, with the document-level fields repeated on every row so your data is instantly pivot-table-ready.

Expense reports, bookkeeping, reimbursement claims, tax season: at some point the stack of receipts has to become a spreadsheet. Retyping is slow, and generic OCR gives you a text blob that still needs sorting into columns.

Documents mode skips both. You load photos, screenshots, or PDFs of your documents, and the AI reads each one — visually, so crumpled thermal-paper receipts and scanned PDFs without a text layer work too — and appends structured rows to your sheet.

Google Sheets™

Google Sheets™ Only

Documents mode lives in Google Sheets™, because its output is spreadsheet rows. The Table and Full extraction modes are also available in Google Docs™ and Slides™.

Step 1: Load Your Receipts

In Google Sheets™, go to Extensions > Text To Table Converter > Selected Image to Table (or open it from the sidebar under Convert & Format), and switch to the Documents tab. Then add your documents: upload images or PDFs, paste a screenshot from the clipboard, or pick files from Google Drive™. For PDFs you choose which pages count. The queue takes up to 10 documents per run.

Under Documents Setup, set the Document Type — receipt, invoice, bank statement, tax form, packing slip, and a dozen more presets — or leave it on auto-detect. There's also a custom option where you describe the document in your own words.

Step 2: Scan Once, Get Your Columns

Click Scan Document. The AI reads the first document and proposes column headers for your sheet — our grocery receipt came back with 13 columns, from receipt number and store name down to item description, quantity, and line total.

You're not stuck with the suggestion: View / Edit Headers lets you rename or drop columns, and the Column Headers setting can instead reuse your sheet's existing headers (perfect for appending to a ledger you already keep) or a preset for the document type.

The Key Setting: One Row per Line Item

The Output Rows setting is what separates this from ordinary receipt OCR:

  • Multiple rows per document - every purchased item becomes its own row, and the document-level fields (receipt number, date, store, cashier) are repeated on each row. This is the format pivot tables, QUERY, and expense category breakdowns want.
  • One row per document - one summary row per receipt, with the line items condensed into a single cell. Right for a simple expense log.

Step 3: Preview, Then Extract

Preview shows exactly what will land in your sheet before anything is written. Our six-item receipt became six rows and 13 columns:

Happy with it? Extract appends the rows to your sheet (or overwrites it, if you set Insert Mode accordingly). An optional Apply column data types checkbox formats numbers and dates properly on the way in. Then feed it the next batch — with headers locked to your sheet, every receipt lands in the same columns.

For the full option-by-option reference, see the Documents mode guide in our documentation.

What It Costs

Image to Table is one of the add-on's premium features: the Free plan includes 20 premium uses every 30 days, which is plenty to try it on a real expense report. Pro removes the cap.
