Why Google Forms Says It Is Not Accepting Responses

When a Google Form says “This form is no longer accepting responses,” first check the Published panel and the form’s response rules. A deadline, response cap, full Drive storage, or a file-upload question in a shared drive can close a form even when the owner expected it to remain open.

Check the Published Status#

1. Open the form in the editor.
2. Click Published in the top-right corner.
3. Under Accepting responses, confirm the form is open.
4. If it is closed, click Manage and remove the close date or response limit, then save.

The editor’s Responses tab can also show whether responses are being accepted, but the current date and response-limit controls are managed from Published.

Check Automatic Close Rules#

Open Published > Manage and look for an expired close date, a response limit that has been reached, or a form that was manually switched off after a deadline. If you recently added a response limit, simultaneous submissions can push the final count slightly beyond the limit.

Check File Upload Questions and Shared Drives#

Google Forms file-upload questions are not supported for forms stored in shared drives. A form with that combination can appear closed to responders even though Accepting responses is enabled. Move the form to an eligible location or remove the file-upload question before testing again.

This is a requirement, not a setting that responders can bypass. Do not ask respondents to change accounts or disable security controls to work around it.

Check Storage and Account Access#

The form owner’s Google Drive storage must have room for new responses and uploads. Also confirm that you are signed in to the account that owns or edits the form; a responder link cannot be repaired from a viewer account.

Test the Responder Link#

1. Open the responder link in an incognito window.
2. Submit a synthetic response.
3. Confirm the form accepts it and that the response appears in the Responses tab.

Testing the live link catches cached editor state, account-specific access, and a closed publication that the editor view may not make obvious.

• Remove expired close dates or response limits.
• Check whether the form lives in a shared drive with a file-upload question.
• Check the owner’s Drive storage.
• Verify the responder link in an incognito window.
• Submit a synthetic test response before sharing the form again.
