The Frustrating Problem

You’ve probably done this before: you open a document, carefully format your “Heading 1” to use the right font and color, and then select Format > Paragraph styles > Heading 1 > ‘Update Heading 1 to match’.

It works perfectly… for that one document. But the moment you create a new document, all your custom styles are gone, and you’re back to the default Arial font. This is a huge waste of time.

The Permanent Fix: Save as Default Styles

The solution is to tell Google Docs™ to save your current document’s styles as the new default for your entire account.

  1. Create Your Perfect Styles: Open a new Google Docs™ document. Type some text for each style you want to customize (e.g., “Normal Text,” “Heading 1,” “Heading 2”).

  2. Format Them: Style each piece of text exactly how you want it to look by default. Change the font, size, color, line spacing, etc.

  3. Update Each Style: For each piece of text you styled, update its corresponding paragraph style. For example, select your styled “Heading 1” text and go to Format > Paragraph styles > Heading 1 > ‘Update Heading 1 to match’. Repeat this for all the styles you changed.

  4. Save as Default: This is the crucial step. Go to the text styles -> Options > Save as my default styles.

A confirmation message will appear stating, “Your default styles have been saved.”
