Merge and Unmerge Table Cells in Docs, Slides, Sheets

Merge selected table cells into one, or unmerge them again, in Google Docs™, Google Slides™, and Google Sheets™ from the sidebar or the Extensions menu.

Merge Cells combines the selected cells of a table into one cell. Unmerge Cells turns merged cells back into single cells. Both are free and work in Google Docs™, Google Slides™, and Google Sheets™.

Select the cells of the title row, click Merge Cells, and the title spans the whole table.

Merge cells

The add-on merges the whole rectangle around your selection. If your selection is uneven, the merge covers the smallest rectangle that contains every selected cell.

  1. 1Select at least two neighboring cells in a table. In Google Sheets™, select the range.
  2. 2In the sidebar, open Tables & Convert > Modify selected table > Merge Cells. You can also use Extensions > Text To Table Converter > Modify Table > Merge Cells.
In Google Docs, drag across the cells to select them.

Google Sheets™Sheets keeps only the value of the top-left cell. Move any other values out of the range first.

Unmerge cells

  1. 1Select the merged cells you want to split apart.
  2. 2Choose Modify selected table > Unmerge Cells in the sidebar, or Extensions > Text To Table Converter > Modify Table > Unmerge Cells.

Unmerge a whole table

If only the cursor is in the table and no cells are selected, Unmerge Cells unmerges every merged cell in that table.

Merged cells and other table tools

Sort Table, Transpose Table, Add Total Row, Split or Join Tables, and Table Editor need a table without merged cells. If one of them stops with a merged-cells message, use Unmerge Cells first, then run it again.

Troubleshooting

  • If you see a message asking you to select cells, select at least two cells. A cursor in a single cell is not enough to merge.
  • Use Edit > Undo in Google Docs, Slides, or Sheets to reverse a merge.
