Add a Total Row to a Table in Docs, Slides, Sheets
Add a row that sums every number column of a table in Google Docs™, Slides™, or Sheets™. Currency, thousands separators, and decimals are kept.
Add Total Row adds a row at the bottom of the selected table with the sum of each number column. It is free and works in Google Docs™, Google Slides™, and Google Sheets™.
The totals are written in the same style as the column: a column of $1,250.00 amounts gets a total like $4,780.50, and a column of whole numbers gets a whole number.

Add the total row
For the example above, the new last row reads Total, 17, and $363.90.
- 1Place the cursor in the table. In Google Sheets™, select the whole table range, including the header row.
- 2In the sidebar, open Tables & Convert > Modify selected table > Add Total Row. You can also use Extensions > Text To Table Converter > Modify Table > Add Total Row.
How the totals are worked out
- If the first row contains text and no numbers, it is treated as the header and left out of the sums.
- A column is summed only when every filled cell in it is a number. Empty cells are skipped. Columns with any text, such as names or dates, stay blank.
- Currency symbols, thousands separators, and negative amounts in parentheses, such as (45.00), are understood.
- Numbers written with a decimal comma, such as 1.234,56, are also understood.
- The total uses the largest number of decimal places found in the column.
- Percent columns, and columns that mix different currencies, are left blank because adding them up would be misleading.
- The word Total goes into the first column that is not being summed.
Differences between Google editors
Swipe sideways to see all columns
| Editor | What the total row contains |
|---|---|
| Google Docs™ | A new formatted row with the totals as text. |
| Google Slides™ | A new formatted row with the totals as text. |
| Google Sheets™ | A new row with =SUM formulas, so the totals update when you change the numbers above. |
Docs and Slides totals are fixed
In Docs and Slides the totals are plain text. If you change a number later, delete the total row and add it again.
Limits and troubleshooting
- Tables with merged cells are not supported. Use Unmerge Cells first.
- If no column contains only numbers, nothing is added and the add-on tells you no suitable table was found.
- Use Edit > Undo to remove the total row.
