How to Keep Word Count Visible in Google Docs
Turn on Display word count while typing, understand what Docs counts, and know why the setting may need to be enabled again after reopening a file.

To keep a live word count visible while writing in Google Docs, open Tools > Word count and enable Display word count while typing. The counter appears in the lower-left corner and can be opened to show pages, words, and characters.

Turn On the Live Counter#
- Open the document on a computer.
- Choose Tools > Word count.
- Check Display word count while typing.
- Click OK.
The count box appears at the bottom left as you type. Click it to switch between pages, words, characters, and characters without spaces.
Count Only a Selection#
Highlight a paragraph or section before opening Tools > Word count. Docs reports the selected text separately from the entire document, which is useful when checking an assignment section or an abstract.
What Is Included?#
Google Docs counts the document body. Headers, footers, and footnotes are excluded unless you select text in the document body. Images and non-text objects are not words.
If the Counter Disappears#
The live display preference may need to be enabled again after refreshing or reopening a document. Repeat Tools > Word count and check the option. If Tools menus are unresponsive, try Chrome or an incognito window to rule out an extension or browser issue.
Docs Does Not Enforce a Word Limit#
The counter helps you monitor a target, but Docs does not stop typing at a maximum word count. For a strict limit, use the counter as a checkpoint and submit only after the document is within the required range.
