Google Docs does not have one native “merge documents” button. For two short files, copy and paste can be enough. For a set of documents where you need a new editable file and a consistent style, use a merge workflow and review the output before sharing it.

The Manual Method#

  1. Create a new Google Doc to become the final document.
  2. Open each source document.
  3. Copy content from one source at a time and paste it into the final Doc.
  4. Add page breaks, headings, and a table of contents only after the content order is final.

This works for a couple of simple documents, but it is easy to miss a section or bring inconsistent formatting with you.

Merge Up to Five Google Docs into a New File#

In Google Docs, open Extensions > Text To Table Converter > Document Tools > Merge Documents. Choose up to five source Docs, arrange their order, and create a new combined document. The first source acts as the style master, so place the document with the formatting you want first.

The original files are not replaced. The output is a new, continuous Google Doc that you can review, edit, and share.

Check the Merged Copy#

Review heading levels, page breaks, tables, lists, spacing, links, and document order. Comments, suggestions, revision history, bookmarks, smart chips, and table-of-contents elements need separate attention. Build or refresh a table of contents after the final document is ready.

When You Should Merge Tabs Instead#

If the sections already live as tabs inside one Google Doc, use Merge Document Tabs instead. That tool is for selected tabs from a single document; this one is for content spread across separate Google Docs.
