Why File Upload Is Greyed Out in Google Forms

If File upload is greyed out in Google Forms, check where the form is stored first. Forms in a Shared Drive cannot use File upload questions. Create or keep the form in one responsible owner’s My Drive, then share the responder link and response data with the team.

This is one of the most repeated Forms questions in Google's help communities because the disabled option does not clearly explain the underlying ownership problem.

The Most Common Cause: The Form Is in a Shared Drive

File upload questions place respondents' files in a folder associated with the form owner. A My Drive file has an individual owner; a Shared Drive is owned by the organization or team.

Because those ownership models are different, Google disables File upload for forms stored in Shared Drives. This is expected behavior, not a browser bug.

The Recommended Fix

1. Decide who is responsible for the form and uploaded files.
2. Create a new form in that person's My Drive, or move the form back to My Drive if Google permits the move.
3. Add the File upload question.
4. Share the form's responder link with the intended audience.
5. Link responses to a Google Sheet.
6. Share the response Sheet—or another reporting view—with the team.

The form itself does not need to live in a Shared Drive for several people to work with its results. Keep the upload destination under a clear owner and share the operational outputs separately.

If You Cannot Move the Existing Form

Make a fresh form in My Drive and copy the questions:

1. Open a new blank form from My Drive.
2. Use Import questions in the floating toolbar.
3. Select the Shared Drive form.
4. Import the required sections and questions.
5. Add the File upload question to the new form.
6. Republish and replace any old responder links.

Before switching links, submit a test upload and confirm which Drive folder receives it.

Other Reasons File Upload Can Be Disabled

If the form is definitely in My Drive, check these possibilities.

Your Workspace administrator disabled it

An organization can use data-protection policies that prevent file collection. If a brand-new My Drive form has the same disabled option, ask the Workspace administrator whether Forms file uploads are restricted.

The owner's storage is full

Uploaded files consume the form owner's available storage. Check Google Drive storage and clear or increase space before testing again.

You are editing the wrong copy

Open the file location from Drive and confirm that the form you are changing is the My Drive copy, not the original Shared Drive version.

A browser extension or stale session is interfering

This is less common than the storage-location issue. Test a new blank My Drive form in a private window before resetting browser settings.

File Upload Still Requires Respondent Sign-In

Moving the form to My Drive enables the question type; it does not make uploads anonymous. Google requires respondents to sign in to a Google Account to upload a file.

That means you cannot simultaneously have:

• a native Google Forms File upload question, and
• completely anonymous respondents with no Google Account.

If your audience cannot sign in, ask for a file-sharing link or use another upload system that meets your privacy and security requirements.

Can Respondents Select a File From a Shared Drive?

Google's responder troubleshooting documentation says files cannot be uploaded directly from a Shared Drive. A respondent may need to download the file to their device first or make an authorized copy in My Drive before attaching it.

A Safer Team Workflow

For business, school, or nonprofit forms:

1. Assign a role-based or carefully managed owner account.
2. Keep the upload form and upload folder in that owner's My Drive.
3. Link the form to a response Sheet.
4. Give the working team only the access it needs.
5. Document what should happen if the owner changes roles or leaves.

This avoids placing a business-critical form under an unmanaged personal account while respecting the current Forms limitation.
