How to Automatically Close a Google Form by Date or Response Limit
Use Google Forms’ built-in close date or response limit, customize the closed-form message, and avoid the response-count edge case.

Google Forms can now stop accepting responses automatically at a chosen date and time or after a response count. Publish the form, open the Published panel, and select Set close date or response limit. You no longer need an add-on or Apps Script for the basic schedule.
Last verified: July 24, 2026.
This is a relatively new built-in feature. Google announced automatic closing in January 2026, so older tutorials may still tell you to install an add-on.
Set a Close Date and Time
- Open your form and publish it.
- Click Published in the top-right corner.
- Under Accepting responses, click Set close date or response limit.
- Select On a date.
- Click Choose date and time and enter the deadline.
- Click OK, then Save.
Google uses the date, time, and time zone shown in the form owner's interface. Include the time zone in your form description when respondents are in different regions.
Close the Form After a Number of Responses
Follow the same path, then select After a number of responses and enter the maximum.
This works well for:
- Event registrations with limited seats
- First-come, first-served sign-ups
- Small research samples
- Capped applications or appointment requests
If the form already has responses, the limit must be higher than the number already received.
Important: The Response Limit Is Not a Reservation System
Google's current Forms help warns that simultaneous submissions can be accepted even when they push the total past your limit.
For example, a form set to close at 100 responses can end with 101 or 102 if several people submit at nearly the same moment.
If exceeding the limit would create a serious problem:
- Treat the Forms limit as a soft cap.
- State that a submission does not guarantee a place.
- Confirm accepted registrations separately.
- Use a booking or ticketing system when inventory must be enforced exactly.
Customize the Closed-Form Message
In the same panel:
- Find Responders will see this message when the form is closed for responses.
- Click the edit icon.
- Enter a useful message.
- Click Save.
Instead of “This form is no longer accepting responses,” explain what happens next:
Registration is now closed. Join the waitlist at [link], or contact [team] if you believe you received this message in error.
The message appears whether the form closes automatically or you turn off Accepting responses manually.
Change or Remove the Deadline
- Open the Published panel.
- Under Accepting responses, click Manage.
- Adjust the date or response limit, or choose Remove expiration.
- Save the change.
Removing the expiration does not necessarily reopen a form if Accepting responses is switched off. Check the toggle before sharing the link again.
Why You Might Not See the Option
The form is not published
Google only accepts responses on published forms. Publish the form before looking for the close controls.
You are looking in the Responses tab
Older instructions often point to the Responses tab. In the current interface, the automatic-close control is in the Published panel.
You are following an old tutorial
Before 2026, scheduling usually required an add-on or Apps Script. The built-in feature has replaced that need for standard date and response-count closures.
The form is already closed
Open Published and confirm whether Accepting responses is off, a deadline has passed, or the response limit has been reached.
Test the Closure Before You Rely on It
- Set a temporary deadline a few minutes ahead, or use a low response limit.
- Copy the responder link.
- Open it in a private browser window.
- Submit a test response.
- Confirm the closed message appears after the condition is reached.
- Replace the test rule with the real deadline or limit.
Also test any response-editing promise. A closed form can affect whether respondents can revisit and edit an earlier submission.
Quick Checklist
- Publish the form first.
- Open Published > Set close date or response limit.
- Choose a date and time or a response count.
- Include the time zone when your audience is distributed.
- Write a useful closed-form message.
- Plan for simultaneous submissions to exceed a response cap.
- Test with the responder link, not the editor URL.
