How to Save a Google Doc as a PDF (and Export Only Part of It)

To save a Google Doc as a PDF, use File > Download > PDF Document. That covers the simple case — but it always exports the whole file, one document at a time, to your downloads folder. When you need only part of a file, separate PDFs, or output that lands in Drive, you need one of the approaches below.

The Built-In Way: File > Download#

In Google Docs™, Sheets™, and Slides™:

1. Open File in the menu bar.
2. Hover over Download.
3. Choose PDF Document (.pdf).

Sheets™ opens a print-style settings screen first (paper size, scale, which sheets); Docs™ and Slides™ export immediately.

This is fine for a quick one-off. Its limits show up quickly, though:

• Docs™ with tabs export every tab into one file — including title pages for each tab. If that is your problem, see our dedicated fix.
• There is no way to export only some slides or a page range into separate files.
• The PDF always goes to your downloads folder, never straight to Drive.
• Exporting many files means repeating the dance for each one.

One-Click Export from the Sidebar#

The free Text To Table Converter add-on adds a Quick Export to PDF action (menu: Extensions > Text To Table Converter > PDF & Image Tools). It generates the PDF and downloads it directly — and from the sidebar flow you can also save the same result to Google Drive™ right after export, which the built-in download cannot do.

Exporting Only Part of a File: Export with Options#

For control over what gets exported, the same add-on has Export with Options… — an advanced export dialog for Docs™, Sheets™, and Slides™:

• Google Docs™: export as PDF or other formats — DOCX, RTF, ODT, EPUB, HTML (zip), and TXT.
• Google Slides™: pick exactly which slides to include, using slide-based scope selection.
• Google Sheets™: pick which worksheets to include, using worksheet-based scope selection.
• Produce one combined file or separate files, depending on the host app.
• Send the result to a browser download, save it to Google Drive™, or hand the PDF straight to the built-in PDF Editor where supported.

A typical use: a workbook with twelve sheets where the client should only ever see two. Select those two worksheets, export them as a single PDF, and save it to Drive — the other ten sheets never leave your file.
